The airline industry has become very competitive over the last decade and that’s thanks to the internet and technology advancement. There is estimated to be around 290 airlines apart of the international Air Transportation Association. It is estimated by 2037 we will have doubled today’s airline passengers, so around 8.2 billion people. (Zhang, 2019)

Now let’s look at the marketing mix and how the internet and technology has changed the seven elements.

Product

There are so many airlines out there from budget to luxury. There are also different cabin services from first class, business, premium economy and economy and depending on your budget will determine what class you fly with. Product looks at the food and beverage you receive on your flight whether it’s a 2-hour flight interstate or a 24-hour flight overseas. With the internet and technology this has become increasingly easier to differentiate the difference between airlines. American Airlines has videos on their YouTube Channel showing inside the aircraft in the different classes.

Promotion

There are too many to count when it comes to websites trying to come to finding flights. Facebook and other social medias are a great way to promote flights are upcoming deals.

A thing that has helped this is email subscriptions. When flights go on sales and your apart of the airline’s subscription service, they will flick you and email about the upcoming sales. Without the internet or emails we would have to check newspapers or go to our closest travel agency. The internet as allowed the airlines to promote of their own websites which wasn’t possible before the internet.

Price

The price of flights has changed a lot of the years and it has become easier and easier to find the best cheapest flights out there. With sites like WebJet, flight centre just to name a few. Without sites like this the consumer wouldn’t be able to find the best possible flight they would be relying on the information from either the airline or the travel agency. The image below shows the difference in price from all the different airlines to the same destination.

Place

As stated above there are so many sites to buy flights that give the consumer a number of places they can purchases from. Most of this can be done on your mobile devices or a computer without having to leave the comfort of your own home. Before the internet and technology like computers and smart phones one would have to either call the airlines directly or visit a travel agency. Now, the middle man is cut out and all done at the click of a button.

People

When it comes to people technology hasn’t changed people, but it has changed how we interact with each other. With social media playing a big part of our lives its not a surprise that we jump straight on to places like Facebook to complain about a bad experience we received from an Airline or other service industry. This has allowed the airline companies to reach out directly to the customer and privately message to try and resolve the issue.

When it comes to social media it can be very trick and seeing that this is a new business you want to ensure that you use the right platform to reach the target audience. Gone are the days were Facebook would be the first go to platform. Now a days I would say Instagram is going to attract the most attention. With right hashtags and images showing off the gear and equipment would be a great start. Having an online store that is user friendly for everyone and easy to use is a must. You don’t want to over complicate it, otherwise the customer will go elsewhere. Get users to tag the business in their new gear or using the equipment. This is a great way to get traffic to your page and have a good potential to get notice.

Checkout of businesses social media site to see what they are doing and what you can learn from it. What works and doesn’t work. Like everything else it’s going to be a learning curb and if at first you don’t succeed try and try again.

  1. I always like your blog layout ^^ I do agree on “Price” section where Digital has the great impact on Airlines industry. I always spend time to search for the cheapest flights before every trips. Some website with fares comparison: traveloka, skyscanners, cheapflights … are the useful and popular ways to buy flight tickets nowadays.

  3. Colourful post with a great layout as usual!! I really like the argument about the traditional way of promotion and digital promotion nowadays in the ‘Promotion’ section. Yes, just try to imagine what will happen in the promotion aspect if without the internet, we have to go to our closest travel agency TT.

I am also doing the tourism industry as well, feel free to check my blog anytime! 🙂
